James Herman Agen

Quarter-length portrait of a man with a two-star lapel pin. Caption reads: "Agen, James Herman. April 29, 1847 - Oct. 5, 1921. He was born at Montpelier, Vt. and at fifteen ran away from home to join the Union Army as a drummer boy during the Civil War. After the war he settled temporarily in Osage, Ia. where he married Ezilda Lodena Hart. They had five children: Bell L., Millie, Grace, Roy J., and Earl V. During this time Mr. Agen made one or two trips to Juneau, Alaska carrying butter and eggs with him from Seattle, Wash. where his brother was in the butter and eggs business. This was during the Gold Rush and Agen was possibly going to view the situation and make a profit at the same time. Later the family moved to Superior, Wis. where Agen went into real estate. They lived there for some time until Agen had an offer from a Col. Wolvin in Texas City, Texas to come and "clean up the town." Agen went first and later sent for his family. After presumably finishing his business with Wolvin, they settled in Houston, Tex. where he continued in real estate until his death. His son, Earl, now lives in San Ysidro, Cal. and one of his daughters married H.A. Vallas and continues to live in Houston. Cf. letter: H.A. Vallas to William Alderfer, Dec. 1, 1960, in the files of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin." |
