Silver Street, Hurley, Prior To Fires of 1887

A view of the businesses present on Silver Street, Hurley's main street, less than three years after the city's settlement. City residents and a horse-drawn carriage are in the street. Caption written by Gib Endrizzi: "Hurley, looking east from the depot (corner of 5th Ave. and Silver St.), 1887. Within one year from the start of construction, Hurley's Main Street showed remarkable progress. Commenting on the development of Hurley, the Gogebic Iron Tribute noted, 'Each day, a new building goes up, and the woods resound with the clash of falling trees and the music of a saw and hammer.' By 1887, Silver Street was packed with storefronts along its five blocks with many more businesses on side streets. On June 7, 1887, a fire that started in the Gogebic Meat and Provision Company destroyed all of Silver between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. A second, more disastrous fire started in the Alcatraz Theater (the tallest building at right) on July 9. Most of Silver Street to the east and many of the buildings seen in this photo, including the Bon Ton and Caledonia Hotel, were consumed in the fire." |
