Typed caption on reverse reads "On a battle-scarred knoll on Mt. Suribachi, Sgt. Stryker (John Wayne, center) and three Marines prepare for a dramatic scene. It's the historic Flag Raising immortalized in the photograph so widely displayed. To add reality to Sands of Iwo Jima"-the Marine Corps epic, Republic Pictures used the three surviving Marines of the original six who actually participated in the flag raising to play their own roles. From left to right they are Ira Hayes, John Bradley, and Rene Gagnon. As another touch of realism, the flag Wayne is holding is the actual flag from Iwo Jima, loaned to Republic by the Marine Corps." |
