His Monument to be Moved Five Miles
Portrait of Oakes Ames, a Republican Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts's 2nd district, 1863-1873. By President Abraham Lincoln's request, Ames took charge of the Union Pacific portion of the transcontinental railroad. He is subsequently credited with its success. Photo caption reads: "His monument to be moved five miles. Thirty seven years ago Oakes Ames, one of the constructors of the first railroad across the Rocky Mountains, had a monument built to his memory in the Rockies. Now it is to be moved to another site five miles distance because it has been found necessary to move the railroad line." |
