War Bride and Groom Back From Spain
A man and woman are seated in front of a flag and next to two posters. Caption reads: "War Bride and Groom Back From Spain. New York, N.Y. — Captain Hans Amlie, of the Washington-Lincoln Battalion of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in Spain, and his bride, the former Milly Bennett of San Francisco, newspaper woman, who were married recently at Albacete, Spain, on a "certificate of death", when it was not possible to produce original birth certificates, are shown. They were forced to make use of the device which permits a dying person to be wed, although neither was ill at the time. Mrs. Amlie, who has been in China, Russia, Spain and other European countries for the past seven years, met her husband while serving as head of the Valencia Press Bureau for the Loyalists. He was in Army service and had been wounded twice in the war. The couple are pictured at the Friends of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Headquarters here." |
