Wilkins 12: Fort Childs or New Fort Kearny

Fort Childs or New Fort Kearny in Nebraska Sketched by Wilkins on his 151-day journey from Missouri to California on the Overland Trail (also known as the Oregon Trail). Wilkins writes of the Fort in his diary: "We passed Fort Childs, or New Fort Kearny as some call it, and a miserable looking place it is being built principally of sods. There are, however, one or two frame houses in the course of erection. It contains one sod store which could not have been erected many weeks. I was much disappointed with the place and as our arrangements had all been made the day previous, we passed on, making no stay at all." |
