This image is one of a larger collection of images by Harold N. Hone, taken for the Writer's Program to be used as illustration for Wisconsin: A Guide to the Badger State. The records of this WPA-sponsored project are housed at the Society, together with 679 negatives, most created by Harold N. Hone. By the 1930s, Hone was one of Madison's best portrait photographers. Home's images express a powerful and positive view of Wisconsin with a more personal view - peaceful and expansive - producing in his photo an almost idyllic vision, not only of the rural landscape but also of city streets, industrial plants, and recreational activities.
