This image is one of many taken of or by Dickey Chapelle, and part of the Dickey Chapelle collection held by the Society. Chapelle was one of the first women foreign correspondents to cover World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and military struggles worldwide, particularly against communism. Her work appeared in "Reader's Digest," "National Geographic," "Look," "Saturday Evening Post." Chapelle was killed in Vietnam in 1965. Her collection includes biographical material and personal papers, primarily news clippings and a few legal documents; photographs; taped interviews; and personal correspondence. In an email on 12/6/2006 from Ted Harris of Deridder LA: I was the Intelligence Sergeant for the Special Forces "A" Team at Camp Don Phuc when this photo of Dickie Chppelle was taken in Nov. 64. In fact, either I or my Team Sergeant, MSG Jerry Jones, took the picture! She accompanied us on many Combat operations, armed only with 3 or 4 cameras (dangling) as she charged head on with the front of the group looking to get another great picture of the action. We were very saddened when we learned of her death just prior to my returning to the States on 29 Nov. 1965. I later returned to Vietnam for another year (Nov 69-Nov 70) where I served with CCN-MACV, in Danang and Phu Bai. I am now a 72 year old, 23 years Retired, US Army Sergeant Major. Thank you for honoring Dickie's memory! |
