Carriage Stuck in the Mud

Horse-drawn carriage stuck in a rut on a muddy road near the Ohio River in Floyd County, Indiana. One man is holding the horse while another attempts to dislodge the wheel. This image was entered in a 1898 competition sponsored by the League of American Wheelman to identify the nation's worst roads conditions. The purpose of the competition was to gather evidence of the need for better roads. The donor, Otto Dorner of Milwaukee, was the national chair of the league's road improvement committee. |
