Surveying Fire Damage

Surveying Fire Damage | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
A close-up of the damage caused to the third Wisconsin State Capitol by the fire of February 26-27, showing the first floor, and looking west through the Rotunda toward the exit. Close scrutiny of this view reveals some details of the original appearance of the Rotunda (compare this to Image ID: 7074), but most notable in the Rotunda is the presence of "Genius of Wisconsin," a female figure with an eagle on her shoulder. This marble statue by Helen Farnsworth Mears is one of the few objects from the third Wisconsin State Capitol on display in the present Capitol. You will find "Genius" one floor above ground level at the southeast entrance.
