Hans Holtan Family

This is said to be the family of Hans Holtan (a.k.a. Austinson) posed in the yard before a frame house that has carpenter's lace on porch, two separate doors, shutters and a fan shape above window on gable. Numerous house plants are on the porch and a man sits in an unusual bucket chair holding out what appears to be a newspaper. In the 1870 census the family consisted of Hans 36, Rana 37, Austin 9, Jergen 1, Jane 5, John 7 and Ole 4 1/2. Holtan's sister Rachel 38 also lived there as well as two male farm laborers. |
