The Wisconsin State Journal was not impressed by the artistry of the seal when it was completed in 1862: "Although with the best intentions and at considerable expense, the appearance of the new front has been injured, from a near point of view, by the insertion over the entrance of the State arms chiseled in the stone in alto relievo. Though ingeniously done, it lacks the ease and grace of an artist's work and the general effect is squalid rather than ornamental." Detail of Image ID: 23339 |
