Third Wisconsin State Capitol Demolition Close-Up
Close-up of the demolition of the dome of the Third Capitol, one of the few known photographs that permits such close observation of the architectural details of the dome. In addition to the exterior, the close-up allows us to glimpse inside to see the Corinthian columns and the plaster stars between each pillar. Maude Keene Gill visited the Capitol in the 1880s and later recalled touring the dome: "One day we climbed to the top of the Capitol, flights of narrow stairs finally giving way to iron ladders... The outlook over the city from the top was beautiful." |
