Ernest Oshkosh

A portrait of a descendant of Chief Oshkosh, probably Ernest Oshkosh, with one foot in a traditional canoe. This image is part of an exhibit about Native Americans prepared by Paul Vanderbilt, the Wisconsin Historical Society's first curator of photography. His caption follows: "Other members of the family of old Oshkosh also achieved prominence. HIs son Akwinemi succeeded him as chief, but was also tried for murder in 1871, found guilty and lost his job to his younger brother Neopit Oshkosh, last chief with any authority. Neopit Oshkosh's sons went away to college. Photograph of Roy Oshkosh in his capacity as member of the Menominee Indian Advisory Council show him as the most conventionally well-trailer, business-suited member of that group." |
