Chief Oshkosh Remembrance

Menominee Indians eating lunch together on Chief Oshkosh Day, May 25, 1926, "the occasion of the removal of the chief's remains from an unmarked grave beside the Wolf River to a spot at the foot of the statue of him by Gaetano Trentanove in Menominee Park in the city of Oshkosh, Wis. A.C. McComb, a public spirited citizen, paid for the transport of the remains and probably provided the lunch. On this day, business was suspended, there was a parade of the Keshena Indian band, with nearly 200 floats, and a banquet at which the Menominee were guests of honor. The crypt of the chief was inscribed, 'Man of Peace, Beloved by All'." This image is part of an exhibit about Native Americans prepared by Paul Vanderbilt. |
