St. Joseph's Catholic Church was built in 1841 by Father Frederick Baraga (later Bishop). The mission was established in 1835 and a small log church was commenced the same year. A local legend puts this church on the site of the original mission established by Fr. Claude Allouez in 1665, but his mission, La Pointe du Sainte Espirit, was actually built on the mainland in or near the present city of Bayfield WI. Photograph was presented by Margaret Eastman Runkel in 1958. |
