Horse-Drawn Reaper near Windmill

Man and a boy working with a horse-drawn reaper in a field. The reaper is likely a model or replica of the McCormick reaper of 1831. A windmill is in the background and the photographer's shadow is in the foreground. The photograph may have been taken for the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company or its successor, the International Harvester Company. |

See also Image ID: 141450 & 141451 In his book "The Reaper," John F. Steward claims that the photograph was taken on the farm of Fred Runger just west of Chicago, Illinois. He further claims that the reaper in the photograph is a "model" of the first reaper. A retouched version of the photograph (with the windmill removed) appeared in Herbert Casson's 1909 biography of Cyrus Hall McCormick. A name stamped on the back of the photo reads: "Geo. E. Mellen." |
