ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Originally a private institution, the State School for the Deaf in Delavan was incorporated by the State Legislature in 1852. Providing free education for "all deaf and dumb residents" (excepting the "imbicile, idiotic, or feeble-minded"), the 250-capacity institution instructed students in academic, vocational, and domestic subjects. Through 1892, state expenditures on the school totaled $1.27 million. Apparently photographer Paul G. Lecher published these images, imprinted with P. Lecher, Milwaukee.
