Established in Janesville in 1849 and commandeered by the state in 1850, the Wisconsin State School for the Blind was the state's first charitable institution. After an 1874 fire destroyed the original building, a new and "practically fire-proof" replacement was erected. Providing free instruction in academic subjects, music, and "fancy work," the School accomodated up to 100 pupils. As of 1892, state expenditures on the School totaled over $962,000. |
