The State Public School in Sparta was chartered by the Legislature in 1885 as a "temporary home for dependent and neglected children," and opened its doors in November 1886. Instructing students in "the elementary branches of an English education," its facilities included a central building, a two-story schoolhouse, brick cottages, barns, and a hospital. Enrollment ranged between 200 and 300 in the early 1890s, and state expenses for the School totaled over $328,000 by 1892. |
