Ole Wettlesen with Horse on his Farm

In 1845, Ole Wettlesen and his wife Thorbjor and family left Laardal, Telemark, Norway, for America, eventually settling in Dane County. There, Ole established a farm in Section 31 of the Town of Christiana, at that time the heart of the growing Koshkonong Norwegian-American community. He became known as a skilled farrier--a veterinary who specialized in treating horses. His son Wettle, known as William, was nine when they arrived and later joined in his father's business. This view shows Ole, on the right and William, left, in front of the barn on their property doctoring a horse. A child swings from a tree behind them. |
