Scofield (1842-1925) was born in Pennsylvania, where he worked on the family farm and lumber mill until he quit school at age 13 to become a printer's apprentice. During the Civil War Scofield enlisted in a Pennsylvania regiment and his demonstration of leadership earned him promotions to captain and then major. Captured at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, Scofield was a prisoner for ten months. After the war he moved to Oconto, and in 1876 he became a partner in a lumber business. Scofield was a state senator from 1887-1890 and in a contest against Robert M. La Follette in 1896 he won the Republican nomination for governor. Scofield served as governor for two terms and retired from active politics in 1901. |
