Polk was born in North Carolina on November 2, 1795 and died on June 15, 1849 in Nashville, Tennessee after hard work left him ill upon leaving office. An honors graduate of the University of North Carolina, Polk served in the Tennessee legislature and then as Governor of Tennessee. Polk was extremely active in the expansion of the U.S. to include Texas, Oregon, and California. |
