Rutherford B. Hayes

Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States (1877-1881). Born in Delaware, Ohio on October 4, 1822, he died on January 17, 1893 in Fremont, Ohio. Hayes won the most heavily disputed election in the country's history, actually losing the popular vote to his opponent. Prior to the presidency, Hayes fought in the Civil War, attaining the rank of brevet major general, was elected to Congress, and served three terms as Governor of Ohio. He announced in advance that he would only serve one term as President. |
