On Horicon Lake in the State of Wisconsin

In April of 1860 Hölzlhuber took the railway from Milwaukee to Lake Horicon to visit the small town that was developing on its shore. Since the settlers were isolated, "they were their own house builders and ship builders, and made their own fishing equipment." Hölzlhuber and some acquaintances from Milwaukee procured food and spirits, and then were rowed in "boats specially made for hunting and trapping" to an island six miles away, where they camped in a tent already prepared. Those boats appear in this image as the canoes banked on the water's edge near a large tipi. In the distance are the town's docks and pier. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
