A Journey on the Steamer 'Milwaukee'
In his journal Hölzlhuber described his departure from Milwaukee. "I spent the last night from May 3rd to 4th, 1860, upon the ocean steamer Milwaukee. I had taken up my quarters in K cabin. I had almost not slept at all and I heard the Dome [cathedral] announcing each hour, but it seemed to me that the chimes were very sad today. When at 4 a.m. the first sign of departure was given, I was already on deck, where I was taken by the fresh sea air and bright sunshine. At 4:30 the wheels of our floating castle started. During our travel through the port I watched all the nice buildings and the pleasant streets for the last time and that made me sad, because I was on my way back to Europe. When we passed the lighthouse I said goodbye to the town in which I had lived for four years, where I had worked and won many dear friends, and with a deep sigh and the words 'May God preserve and guard you' I went back to my berth." Hölzlhuber here depicts passengers and crew on the deck of the ship, under full steam on the Lake. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
