Forest Fire between Lansing and Grandhaven in Michigan

Forest Fire between Lansing and Grandhaven in Michigan | Painting | Wisconsin Historical Society
The maple and hickory forests in the old northwest were often plagued with fires during the summer months. Hölzlhuber, on a return journey from Niagara Falls on the Detroit-Milwaukee Railroad, passed through a large forest fire on July 29, 1859. It took more than 25 minutes for the train to get beyond the fire safely, and the passengers and workers all arrived in Grandhaven "dirty, coughing, and hot." Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner.
