The Farm of Heinrich Cordes near Onalaska on the Black River

Due to rainy weather, Hölzlhuber stayed a night in the home of Heinrich Cordes, who had purchased his land from an Irishman and built "a pretty brick house" in 1859. The next day Cordes drove him to the nearest steamship dock on the Mississippi, at the mouth of the Black River. This substantial two-story building with two wings and a cupola sits among wooden outbuildings and farm implements. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner.
