Herndan Hotel on the Missouri River

Hölzlhuber received a request from the German theater director Henry Börnstein in St. Louis, Missouri, to purchase his theater sets and music. Accordingly, he took vacation from the German-English Academy to travel there by train, along with his friend Otto Ruppius, on November 4, 1858. While in St. Louis they attended a minstrel show, and stayed at the Union Hotel. After concluding business, they journeyed on the elegant steamer Traveler up the Missouri River to Omaha City. He and Ruppius entertained passengers with violin and singing after dinner; Hölzlhuber remarked that the piano was from the Mason factory in New York, and a very good instrument. Pictured here is the large Herndan Hotel with a stagecoach in the foreground. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
