Chester A. Arthur

Head and shoulders portrait of Chester A. Arthur, the 21st President of the United States. Arthur was born on October 5, 1829 in Fairfield, Vermont, and died on November 18, 1886, in New York City. As Vice President under James A. Garfield, Arthur became President when Garfield was shot and killed. After college, Arthur taught, practiced law in New York State, and served as Quartermaster General for New York during the Civil War. After the Civil War, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Arthur Collector of the Port of New York. As President, he became a champion of civil service reform. His administration implemented the first general federal immigration law. Known as a man of fashion and style, Arthur suffered from a fatal kidney disease, which he kept secret during his Presidency. He was not renominated for a second term. |
