Rendering of a Thordarson Electical Manufacturing Company product. Chester Thordarson was a Chicago inventor and manufacturer of electical apparatus, famous for inventing the electrical transformer in 1904. He was also known for his bequest of what was the core of the UW-Madison rare book collection and his estate on Rock Island in Door County. This item, from the Thordarson Electric Manufacturing Company Electrical Laboratory and Demonstration Apparatus catalog is described as a "coil of many turns constructed so that a suitable incandescent lamp may be screwed into contact with its two terminals and permit a most vivid demonstration of the strength and direction of an alternating current field in various positions." |
