"An interesting attempt was also made to obtain oil portraits of four of the directors or superintendents of the [State Historical] Society [of Wisconsin] for our collection. It was decided, in preparation for the Draper Centennial and in the spirit in which [Lyman Copeland] Draper did this sort of thing, that we should try to find representative artists to do the portraits of Milo Quaife, Joseph Schafer [1954.17] and Edward Alexander [1954.16]. The artists finally selected by a committee of the Board of Curators included Aaron Bohrod, Charles Thwaites and James Watrous, listed in the order of the subjects of their portraits. The museum made the arrangements with the artists, supplied them with available photographs and data. Since the commissioning of these portraits, the Board of Curators has ordered that the present director [Clifford Lord; 1955.609] should also have his portrait painted for the collection. Lester Bentley, native of Two Rivers, has been chosen to execute the portrait." (State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Proceedings 1952-1953, p. 25.) |
