Nils P. Haugen

Nils Pederson Haugen, a Republican congressman from River Falls, Wisconsin. In 1894 Robert M. La Follette, Sr., induced Congressman Haugen to run for governor as part of the first open split between the Stalwart and Progressive factions of the Wisconsin Republican Party. Unsuccessful in this attempt, Haugen returned to his River Falls law practice. In 1901 newly-elected Governor La Follette appointed Haugen state tax commissioner, and in that capacity Haugen became a nationally known tax expert and a leader of the Progressive Republicans. |
