Wilkins 37: Ferry at Green River

The Ferry at Green River in Wyoming; a single wagon is crossing the river. Sketched by Wilkins on his 151-day journey from Missouri to California on the Overland Trail (also known as the Oregon Trail). Wilkins writes in his diary: "We passed the ferry for a miracle without accident, a more crazy thing to call a boat I never saw. It required one man to bail all the time, while another at every trip kept stuffing in bits of rag. We had a great dispute about paying the full amount of ferage, which is still unsettled; the owner telling us if we would find a yoke of oxen to cordell the boat and otherwise assist, he would allow us for it, which afterwards he refused to do, but wanted the full amount." |
