Bear Valley in Utah; sketched by Wilkins on his 151-day journey from Missouri to California on the Overland Trail (also known as the Oregon Trail).Wilkins writes in his diary: "We are now continuing up Bear River, a beautiful valley with plenty of grass, but scarce of timber, there being except in a few instances nothing but Willows on the border of the stream. But the bluffs on each side (or they may almost be called mountains they are so very high) are the finest I have seen; rich in color oweing to a kind of red clay that makes its appearance here and there thro' the scanty grass, diversified with small bushes and patches of Cedar...this morn we started at sunrise, being obliged to leave the river bottom, oweing to a cannion, and ascend and descend the mountain the steepest and longest ascent we have made on the route. I made a sketch of the descent on the other side, but oweing to the clouds of dust, it was anything but pleasant to sit sketching."
