Percheron

A farmer shows off his percheron colt at the Wisconsin State Fair. At the turn of the century when a farmer's livelihood was dependent on his horses, the draft breed competition at the fair was of great interest. Although not imported until 1839, during the second half of the nineteenth century the percheron breed enjoyed great popularity because of its adaptability to heavy farm and draft work. Wide use of tractors and mechanized farm equipment following World War II led to the virtual disappearance of the breed. More recently, however, the percheron has experienced a revival of interest for recreational purposes and among small farmers. |
