Strike kitchen of Local 50, United Packinghouse Workers of America (Plankinton Packing Company). Left to right: Al Herold (chef), Ernie Bernie, Jimmy Glover, Joe Catanese, and Henry Cabell. The United Packinghouse Workers had one of best records of any union on racial issues. In 1948, 83% of UPWA locals had African American stewards, and 73% had African Americans on their executive boards. |
