The treaty of 1854 between the Ojibway and the U.S. Government was signed in the lawn in front of this building. The treaty established the Red Cliff and Odanah reservations. The building was built in 1836 by Charles Oakes, a trader on Madeline Island. The building was destroyed by fire in 1923. |
