Mary Vilas Hanks House, 525 Wisconsin Avenue

Ornate exterior of the Hanks house at 525 Wisconsin Avenue, built by Colonel William F. Vilas for his daughter Mary Vilas Hanks. The window detail shows vertical panels broken horizontally into elaborate "quoins," and the abundance of small details which the Claude and Starke building firm incorporated into the house. |

Col. william Vilas, was a member in Grover Cleveland's Cabinet and United States senator from 1891-1897. Vilas built the home for his daughter Mary, who later married Lucien Hanks, then president of the First National Bank of Madison. He built the home on the edge of the street so it wouldn't spoil the view of Lake Mendota from his home next door. The home is now divided into apartments and a business office. Originally published in a Wisconsin State Journal column entitled "Have You Seen This Madison?". The column ran from 1969 to 1977. |
