Forest Hill Cemetery

A Confederate Rest at the Forest Hill cemetery, showing the graves of Confederate soldiers who died at Camp Randall as prisoners of war in 1862. The men were captured at Island 10 on the Mississippi River a few miles south of Cairo, Illinois, in April, 1962. They arrived in Madison on April 21st, and those who were able were transferred to Camp Douglas by May 30, 1862. Most of those that died in that short time died of wounds received in the battle in which they were taken as prisoners. |
