The Evolution of the Reaper, Part Two

Three illustrations from an 1883 McCormick Harvesting Machine Company catalog portraying the evolution of the reaper. The first drawing is captioned: "Fourth Stage. McCormicks Hand Rake Reaper, 1831." It shows a man riding on one of the two horses pulling the reaper, with another man standing and working at the back of the reaper. The second drawing is captioned: "Fifth Stage. McCormicks Advance Self-Rake Reaper, 1869." It shows a man sitting and driving a two-horse team pulling the reaper. The third drawing is captioned: "Sixth Stage. McCormick's Twine Binder 1883." It shows a man driving a two-horse team pulling the binder. On the left side cobwebs are on a discarded reaping hook and grain cradle. On the right, slaughtered swine are hung up over a barrel. |
