#5029 The home was later destroyed by fire. Carl Schurz, one of the most celebrated German Americans, was born on March 2,1829, in Liblar, Germany near Cologne, and died on May 14,1906, in New York. He was a supporter of the early Republican party and was appointed U.S. envoy to Spain by President Lincoln. He served as Secretary of the Interior under President Rutherford B. Hayes from 1877 to 1881. He later moved to New York City, where he helped found the New York Evening Post and became nationally known as a political writer and reformer. |
