Christmas issue of "St. Nicholas" magazine, the most studied children's periodical of the 19th century, which was published by Mary Mapes Dodge. This cover, which is by noted artist George Inness, Jr., shows a red-robed Santa Claus figure riding in a sleigh/magazine drawn by six reindeer.
