This wind-powered mill was constructed in 1900 by Finnish immigrant Jacob Davidson, who hand-carved wooden gears to turn the millstones. An engine was later installed to turn the mill. The caption beneath the photograph reads: "Finnish Windmill: This fine old Douglas County mill, the photographer's delight, is located near Superior on State Highway 13 toward Port Wing. This wind powered mill for grinding flour and feed was constructed about 1900 by Jacob Davidson, who located on the Amnicon River in 1887 upon arriving in this state from Finland. He carved by hand the huge wooden gears which turn the heavy millstones. Often when there was more wind at night, Davidson stayed up all night to grind flour or feed. Later he installed an engine, so he could operate the mill when there was no wind." |
