Keyes Residence
Interior of the Keyes residence, home of Elisha W. Keyes, political leader. According to Keyes' daughter, Mrs. John C. Gaveney, the framed pictures, etc., above the bookcase, from door to the right, are: unknown, John C. Spooner, E.W. Keyes, Matthew Carpenter, a feather from the eagle "Old Abe," picked up by Keyes on the Capitol grounds from underneath the bird's perch. The motto framed and hanging above the fireplace reads: "I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again." |
