Map of the City of Madison, Dane County, State of Wisconsin

Map

Madison was booming in the 1850s, helped by the efforts of developer Leonard Farwell. When famous journalist Horace Greeley visited Madison, Farwell had 10,000 copies of this map printed. It prominently features Greeley's approving comments and extols the city's many advantages. The map was published by George Harrison, surveyed and drawn by P. McCabe, and engraved by J.H. Colton & Co., New York. In addition to streets, property lots, and various natural features, the map shows building footprints and some landowners. At lower right is an inset illustration of the Capitol building.
