Francis Jefferson Coates of the 7th Wisconsin who earned the Medal of Honor for bravery at the Battle of Gettysburg. Sergeant Coates was so severely wounded during the battle that he lost the sight of both eyes. In this photograph, which dates from after the war, Coates is wearing his medal.
