View of the Butte des Morts Treaty Ground, with the arrival of the Commissioners Gov. Lewis Cass and Col. McKenny

Little Lake Butte Des Morts just north of Lake Winnebago where Governor Lewis Cass of Michigan, and Thomas McKenney, head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (seen here arriving in a boat), met with Menominee leaders to settle their territorial disputes in 1827. Because representatives of the Oneida and Stockbridge tribes did not attend, the territorial issues were not resolved until 1831 in Washington, D.C. At that time the Menominee ceded lands between Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebago. Hand-colored lithography from the Aboriginal Portfolio, painted by J.O. Lewis, who accompanied McKenney and Cass, at the Treaty of Butte des Morts (1827). |
