Map
This map shows Marquette's and Joliet's discoveries of land and people in the northern part of America in the year 1673, centered on the Mississippi River. Oriented with north to the left, the map includes the western part of Lake Michigan at the top of the map. It shows American Indian nations, settlements, mountains, lakes and early French forts, as well as the major rivers. The title cartouche includes a Dutch language title and an illustration depicts explorers being paddled along a river in a boat while Native Americans harvest plants in the background. Although a previous owner hand-dated this copy 1780, others appeared as early as 1707 bound into collections of travels. This copy, unlike many found in other collections, retains its elaborately engraved border.
