Highway Detour Sign
Detour sign posted by the Wisconsin Highway Commission, the predecessor of the Department of Transportation, in Manitowoc showing a confusing detour route to Sheboygan. In 1917 the Highway Commission adopted a standard signage format and numbering system. This sign identifies the detour route by number so the photograph must postdate 1917, although its informality suggests that it must have been shortly after. |
